Steven Silvers Photographs

Inspired by Henri Cartier-Bresson, Elliott Erwitt, and other humanist photographers, Steven Silvers takes a black-and-white photojournalistic approach to capturing contemplative, narrative compositions of people, animals and places, both natural and man-made.

Silvers’ work crosses many photographic genres, including street, landscape, minimalism, travel, wildlife and documentary – all tied together by his unique eye for storytelling combined with old-school news image tonality.

It was 47 years ago when as an 18-year-old Army journalist in Korea, Silvers used his own money to buy an inexpensive Canon AE-1 and began taking pictures for the weekly base newspaper. A few years later, Silvers was selected to attend the acclaimed Navy Photojournalism Program at Syracuse University’s Newhouse School of Public Communications.

His career took a different turn a few years after leaving the military in 1984 and he’s been a strictly amateur photographer ever since, taking pictures with an evolving variety of film and digital SLRs, pocket cameras, iPhones and mirrorless kits.

In 2024, Silvers finally began sharing his work publicly via a new website built around two ongoing gallery projects: Stories in Passing and In the Presence of Places. This year, Silvers marked his first-ever gallery appearance with two images from Stories in Passing chosen for the juried Colorado Photographic Arts Center annual members exhibition.
